Russia’s President Vladimir Putin signed two agreements between Russia and Georgia into law, one of which refers to the withdrawal of Russian military bases from Georgia and the other to military transit via Georgia, the Kremlin reported on October 26.
Both agreements were signed between Georgia and Russia on March 31, 2006 and ratified by the legislative bodies of the both countries.
Russia has begun pulling out from its two military bases in Georgia and has already withdrawn some of its military hardware. Russia said that it will speed up the withdrawal process and pull out its headquarters in Tbilisi by the end of 2006, two years ahead of the original deadline of late 2008.
The second agreement, regarding the transit of military personnel and cargo, will enable Russia to gain access to its military base in Gyumri, Armenia via Georgia.
