The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the Georgian Parliament’s July 18 resolution on Russian peacekeepers and said that unilateral decisions of the Georgian side can not annul agreements, which make a legal base for presence of Russian peacekeeping troops in the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflict zones.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 18 that Moscow will undertake all the necessary measures to fulfill existing international agreements and will not let destabilization of situation in the region and “will protect rights and interests of Russian citizens” residing breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“The Russian side considers the resolution as a provocative step aimed at escalating tensions, thwarting existing negotiating formats, demolishing of legal basis for peaceful resolution of the Georgian-Abkhaz and Georgian-Ossetian conflicts,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
“We think that the language of ultimatums, which Georgia uses regarding Russian peacekeepers, is counterproductive. Unilateral decisions cannot lead to cancellation of relevant international agreements. Our position remains unchanged – adoption of Parliament’s resolutions on withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers will trigger new crisis and humanitarian catastrophe.”
