Russian Senior MP Calls on Georgia for Restraint

The parliamentarians from the Russian State Duma, the lower house of the Parliament, call on their Georgian counterparts to refrain from taking unilateral steps in respect of conflict zones, Chairman of the Duma Boris Grizlov told RIA Novosti on July 20.

He said that the Georgian authorities? attempts ?to unfreeze the conflicts? will lead to ?negative consequences.?

?Those, who say, that the problem consists in Russian peacekeepers, are mistaken. The conflict was launched not by the Russian peacekeepers,? Grizlov said.

He said that the Georgian parliamentarians want quick and simple solution of conflicts. ?But just this kind of hasty decisions have triggered both Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflicts,? Grizlov added.

The Georgian Parliament passed a resolution on July 18 instructing the government to launch relevant procedures in order to immediately suspend, as the document reads, ?the so-called peacekeeping operations? in breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
