Burjanadze Briefs MPs over UN Speech on Abkhazia

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said at the Parliament?s special session on July 14 that the aim of her address at the UN Security Council on July 11 was to inform ?the friendly nations? about the performance of Russian peacekeepers in the Abkhaz conflict zone, ?to ensure that the Parliament?s resolution on withdrawal of peacekeepers would not become a surprise for them.?

?We support peaceful resolution of the conflict, but in case of maintenance of the current [peacekeeping operation?s] mandate, the conflict will not be settled peacefully, as in reality the peacekeepers perform the function of border troops there,? Burjanadze said.

She told the parliamentarians that her speech was ?harsh, but absolutely impartial.?

The Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson also stressed that the UN Security Council President, the French representative, did not allow her to respond to a reaction of the Russian envoy, who slammed Burjanadze?s speech.

It is expected that the Parliamentary will pass the resolution on Russian peacekeeping troops stationed in the Abkhaz conflict zone after a summit of G8 leaders in St. Petersburg, which will be held on July 15-17.
