Foreign Minister Speaks of Russian Peacekeepers

Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili said on June 14 that the Georgian government has not yet finally decided the fate of the Russian peacekeeping troops stationed in the Abkhaz conflict zone and added that the Parliament has a decisive say in this issue.

The Georgian Parliament is expected to discuss the performance of the Russian peacekeepers in Abkhazia in July, which may result in a demand for their withdrawal.

?We have openly told our Russian friends that in a democratic state the society has an opinion and this opinion is expressed by the elected Parliament. We, naturally, will go to the Parliament and express our opinions [regarding the peacekeepers], therefore we cannot outrun events,? Bezhuashvili told reporters upon his return from St. Petersburg, where he participated in talks between the Russian and Georgian Presidents.

He said that Georgia should be well-prepared for a radical decision in respect to the Russian peacekeepers, as it will change ?the entire dynamics of conflict resolution.?
