Parliament Elects Chairman for the Investigative Commission

The Parliament elected on October 26 MP Pridon Rukhaia as the chairman of the commission which will probe into the alleged illegal business activities of MP Koba Bekauri, a Parliamentarian from the ruling National Movement party.

Non-partisan MP Pridon Rukhaia is a deputy chairman of the parliamentary faction Majoritarians. The faction is not formally a part of the parliamentary majority, but is affiliated with the ruling party.

Earlier on Wednesday the parliamentary majority declined two nominations from the opposition parties for this position ? MP Koba Davitashvili, the leader of Conservative Party and MP Davit Berdzenishvili of the Republican Party.

Lawmakers from the ruling party claimed that both of these nominations were politically-motivated, hence could not provide an unbiased probe.
