Sokhumi Strongly Backs Russian-led Peace Operation in Abkhazia

Foreign Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Shamba said in an interview with the Russian news agency RIA Novosti on October 12 that Russia has ?no moral right? to pull out its peacekeepers from the conflict zone, as the withdrawal will ?foster Georgia?s aggressive intentions.?

He said that the Georgian Parliament?s resolution passed on October 11, which sets a performance deadline to the Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflict zones, ?means Georgia?s willingness to trigger a new conflict.?

?The military rhetoric of Georgia and its militarization speaks the aggressive intentions of our neighbor,? Sergey Shamba said.

?If the peacekeepers pull out, the UN military observers will not be able to continue working any more, this will blow all the agreements and entire peace process,? he added.

Shamba also said that Georgia has no right to demand that the Russian peacekeepers withdraw unilaterally without the consent of the Abkhaz side.
