Court Refuses to Ban President from Campaigning for Party

A Tbilisi District Court, on October 10, turned down the opposition Conservative Party?s appeal demanding that the country?s President be barred from participating in a political party?s election campaign.

According to the election code, representatives of the executive government does not have the right to campaign in favor of a political party. But the court cited the Georgian Constitution, which says that the Georgian President is Head of State; hence the court did not consider the President a representative of the executive government.

The Conservative Party appealed the court after President Saakashvili began actively campaigning in favor of the ruling National Movement party?s MP nominations on the eve of MP by-elections in five single-mandate constituencies on October 1.
