The Leadership of the National Movement announced on August 30 that MP Davit Zurabishvili’s decision to quit the ruling party’s parliamentary faction was not a surprise and the move was long anticipated.
“Although he was deputy chairman of the faction, his role in the position was just formal… This was not a surprise because he was against the policies [of ruling party],” MP Maia Nadiradze, the majority leader and chairman of the National Movement’s parliamentary faction, said.
Ruling party MP Giga Bokeria said on August 30 that the National Movement’s faction was already planning to discuss Zurabishvili’s dismissal from the faction at the session on September 4.
Zurabishvili’s decision to quit the ruling party comes after he was criticized by Bokeria for condemning MP Koba Bekauri for the latter’s role in the arrest of co-founder of 202 TV Shalva Ramishvili. Zurabishvili also demanded that Bekauri’s alleged wrongdoings related with to customs terminal Opiza be discussed at the session of the National Movement’s parliamentary faction. MP Bekauri is also deputy chairman of the National Movement’s parliamentary faction.
A total of 12 parliamentarians have already withdrawn their membership from the National Movement’s parliamentary faction since last May.
