Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted Chairman of the Russian Parliament’s lower house Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev as saying, on April 19, that the visit by U.S. President George W. Bush to Georgia, scheduled for May 10, could positively influence Russian-Georgian relations.
The Russian MP said that his recent talks with U.S. Department of State officials give him reason to think this. “If the words of the U.S. officials coincide with their deeds, President Bush may play an important and constructive role in the settlement of the Russian-Georgian relationship,” the Russian MP said.
He said the purpose of the U.S. President’s visit to Georgia is to convince the Georgian government to “remain devoted to a peaceful settlement of [their] problems and reject any forceful resolution to [their] conflicts.”
