Georgian MFA Keeps Silent over Talks on Russian Bases

Georgian Foreign Ministry still refuses to unveil details of Russo-Georgian talks over military bases stationed in Georgia before the end of the negotiation process.

?Talks continue, hence we do are not making any comments. We are expecting the Russian delegation to arrive by mid-April in Tbilisi,? Giorgi Gomiashvili, the Deputy Foreign Minister said at a news conference on March 28, adding that the negotiation ?process is due to be over by mid-May.?

The Georgian-Russian talks held in Moscow on March 23-25 failed to narrow the gap existing over the two sides’ proposed timeframe for the withdrawal of Russia?s two military bases stationed in Batumi and Akhalkalaki.

A Georgian Parliament?s resolution against Russian military bases, which was adopted on March 10, instructs the executive government of Georgia to take measures, including the halting of the issuance of entry visas to Russian military servicemen, if an agreement over a ?reasonable? timeframe for their withdrawal is not reached with Russia before May 15, 2005.
