Abashidze Fears of ‘Special Operation’ in Adjara

Defiant Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze said in a live broadcast at Adjara TV on April 22, that the country’s central authorities “prepare special operation against” him.

“We know everything about this operation – how it will be carried out, by whom and when – hence we are taking all the necessary counter measures,” Aslan Abashidze said.

Abashidze’s statement follows Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s harsh criticism of Adjarian leader.

“The people of Adjara must be freed from this criminal clan,” President Saakashvili said, while addressing the newly convened Parliament on April 22, referring to Abashidze’s regime in Adjara.

Later on April 22, Deputy Security Minister of Georgia Gigi Ugulava described Aslan Abashidze as “a de facto head of Autonomy.”

“We can call him [Aslan Abashidze] de facto as legitimacy of his authority narrows day after day,” Gigi Ugulava said.
