MP Arrested in Police Round-up

The police carried out special operation in Georgia”s second largest city of Kutaisi overnight on March 5 and arrested 15 so called alleged “criminal bosses.”

Bondo Shalikiani, an influential oil monopolist in Kutaisi, who was elected as MP in Tkibuli single-mandate constituency near Kutaisi in last November parliamentary elections, was also arrested with illegal procession of arms allegations.

“He has no MP immunity yet and we had legal right to arrest him,” said Irakli Okruashvili, General Prosecutor. He personally supervised the round-up operation in Kutaisi.

Certain political forces, including former governor of Imereti region Temur Shashiashvili, were accusing Bondo Shalikiani in alleged links to criminal groups.

Round-up operation in Kutaisi was launched on March 4, when the police failed to arrest suspected car hijackers. As a result of armed clash three policemen, one by-passer and one alleged criminal died and two policemen were injured.
