Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer said on December 18, that Adjara is a part of Georgia, ?therefore it should participate in the presidential elections.?
On December 18 Walter Schwimmer met with Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze in Strasbourg.
Abashidze threatened earlier to boycott the presidential elections; in case the country?s new authorities do not postpone elections until June.
Walter Schwimmer said in the interview with Georgian Rustavi 2 television that he held a telephone conversation with presidential contender Mikheil Saakashvili, who assured him that the upcoming presidential elections will be fair and transparent.
