U.S. Envoy Hopeful over Tbilisi-Batumi Relations

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Richard Miles, who visited Batumi today to hold talks with Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze, said there are signs that the situation between the central authorities and the autonomous republic will normalize.

?The situation, which existed between the central authorities of Georgia and the Adjara Autonomous Republic for past years, was not normal. Now, there are some prospects and possibility for normalization of the situation,? Richard Miles told reporters upon his arrival in Tbilisi.

Aslan Abashidze demands postponement of elections until June and threatens to boycott the January 4 presidential elections.

Nino Burjanadze failed on December 10 to convince Aslan Abashidze not to boycott elections. Abashidze and Burjanadze held six-hour long negotiations in Batumi. The both sides pledge after talks to continue negotiations.

State Minister Zurab Zhvania told Rustavi 2 television on December 16 that he would visit Batumi ?in the nearest days.? He also said that the election would be held on January 4.
