Shevardnadze Accuses “International Organization” of Funding Opposition

(Tbilisi, June 2, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze in his Monday radio broadcast on June 2 accused “one of the international organizations of funding the anti-governmental forces.”

President refrained from naming this organization, however said that he knows “its members and their activity well.”

“They have done much for Georgia, but they are now interfering in Georgian politics, that is not their business,” Shevardnadze said.

Irina Sarishvili-Chanturia, member of the pro-governmental alliance and leader of the National-Democratic Party, said after the meeting with the US Ambassador last week ”the Soros Foundation was funding a number of anti-governmental protest rallies.”
