Georgia’s Advisor Says Lack of Finances Hinders Reforms

(Tbilisi. March 28, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Chairman of the International Board of Advisors on Security Issues of Georgia Sir Gary Johnson said at the briefing in Tbilisi today that the lack of finances is the main problem that hinders reforms of security and defense system of the country.

He said that in the couple of weeks the board will present report to the Georgian National Security Council regarding the fulfillment of the recommendations of the Advisors’ Board by the Georgian authorities.

Gary Johnson also said that along with the financial problems uncoordinated activity of the high officials of the defense and security bodies of the country also delays reforms. 

“Next two years would be crucial for carrying out reforms,” a chief security advisor of the Georgian government said. 

The Advisors’ Board was established with the support of the US, Britain and German governments in 1998. It supports Georgian defense and security bodies in implementing reforms.
