NGOs, State Minister Discuss Reforms in Election System

(Tbilisi, January 11, 2003. Civil Georgia) – The Democratic Coalition, formed by the seven local NGOs meets the State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze today to discuss provisions of the reform of the election system in Georgia.

The Democratic Coalition actively pushes the authorities to reform the entire election system, to ensure fair and democratic Parliamentary (in 2003) and Presidential elections (in 2005).

At the meeting today representatives of the Democratic Coalition and State Minister will discuss the creation of the working group which would draft the provisions of the reform.

The Democratic Coalition also supports the idea of dismissing the current Central Election Commission (CEC), which is responsible for the management of the elections. 

Zurab Chiaberashvili of election watchdog NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy and the member of the Democrat Coalition says that the working group, which will be composed by the representatives of the government and NGOs, will work out the proposals concerning the forming of the new CEC.
