(Tbilisi, May 21, Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze visits Kodori gorge today, the only part of Abkhazia controlled by Georgian government.
The basic aim of this visit is to see the local population and observe the situation there. Burjanadze has been planning this trip for a long time.
Further Georgian-Abkhazian negotiations were held yesterday, May 20, in Gali, breakaway Abkhazia, where Georgia’s State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze and Abkhazia’s so-called prime minister Anri Jegenia met.
No resolutions were made during the negotiations. Abkhazian side still demands the withdrawal of Georgian border guards from Kodori gorge. Somehow the demand is groundless since, according to the Georgian side, it is not supported by any agreement.
Georgian side withdrew its regular army units from Kodori in April as it was agreed with the agreement of April 2.
